Hynix Semiconductor was established as Hyundai Electronics Industry Co., Ltd. in 1983 and officially listed in South Korea in 1996. In 1999, it acquired LG Semiconductor and changed the company name to (subsidiary) Hynix Semiconductor in 2001, separating it from Hyundai Group. In October 2004, the system IC business was sold to Citigroup, becoming a professional memory manufacturer. In February 2012, SK Group, the third-largest chaebol in South Korea, announced the acquisition of 21.05% of Hynix's shares to take over the memory giant.

On September 5, 2019, according to a report in South Korea's Central Daily, SK Hynix's semiconductor factory in Wuxi, China has completely replaced Japanese products with Chinese produced hydrogen fluoride after the Japanese government restricted the export of cutting-edge semiconductor materials such as hydrogen fluoride, photoresists, and fluorinated polyimides to South Korea.

In August 2022, media reported that Hynix planned to build a new advanced chip packaging plant in the United States, and is expected to break ground in the first quarter of 2023.

On October 27, 2022, Hynix agreed to join the Open Innovation Platform 3D Fabric Alliance to promote the development of 3D semiconductors.

On July 4, 2023, following Nvidia, multiple technology giants around the world are bidding for SK hynix's fifth generation high bandwidth memory HBM3E; HBM3E is the next generation product of HBM3, and SK Hynix is currently the only company in the world that can produce HBM3 chips on a large scale. Therefore, other manufacturers who want to purchase HBM3E can only look for it.
