Less than 2 years after acquisition, AMD abandoned Xilinx CPLD chips

Due to declining operating rates and supplier sustainability, AMD will discontinue commercial/industrial "XC" products such as XC9500XL, CoolRunner XPLA 3, CoolRunner II, Spartan II, and Spartan 3, 3A, 3AN, 3E, 3ADSP, as well as the "XA" series products for the automotive industry.

AMD explicitly stated in the notice that it will not provide any direct replacement products after cutting off existing CPLD or FPGA chips. If AMD chooses not to follow up on replacements in the future, it means that AMD will abandon the old FPGA chips and completely end CPLD products.

FPGA, translated as Field Programmable Gate Array, is a semi customized circuit in special application integrated circuits. It not only compensates for the shortcomings of fully customized circuits, but also overcomes the limitation of the number of logic gates in the original programmable logic controller.

CPLD is translated as a complex programmable logic device, suitable for implementing various operations and combinational logic. A CPLD contains several PALs, and the interconnection lines between each PAL can also be programmed and recorded. CPLD uses this multi in one integration approach, allowing it to realize circuits that can only be composed of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of logic gates.

AMD had previously produced CPLD products, but after acquiring Xilinx in 2022, the latter mainly provided them.

Seilingsi's main product is FPGA, but the company also produces CoolRunner branded CPLDs. At the beginning of its acquisition of Serenius, AMD seemed to have a strong preference for CPLD.

AMD does not seem to be a loyal supporter of CPLD, as it has discontinued all CoolRunner products and the reason for the discontinuation is currently unclear.

The CoolRunner chip is already very old, and the first CoolRunner II chip was released in 2002. In the twenty years from the release of CoolRunner II to its acquisition by AMD, Sirius has not developed a new CPLD, so it seems unlikely that AMD will regain CPLD.
