Exclusive prediction: The new generation of mobile DRAM memory specification LPDDR6 is expected to be officially announced in the third quarter of this year

According to South Korean media etnews, the new generation of DRAM memory specification LPDDR6 for mobile devices is expected to be officially announced in the third quarter of this year.

Sources have revealed that the industry standard setting organization JEDEC Solid State Technology Association recently held a consultation on the standards for next-generation mobile random access processors in Lisbon, Portugal. The attending parties had extensive discussions and completed the finalization of the LPDDR6 standard, which is scheduled to be released in the third quarter of this year.

At present, the widely used LPDDR5 specification was released in 2019, while the upgraded LPDDR5X specification was launched in 2021, with multiple adjustments to achieve higher speeds, up to 8533Mbps. In addition, SK Hynix has launched a 9.6Gbps LPDDR5T product based on private specifications, while Micron has also launched LPDDR5X memory with the same speed.

In recent years, with its energy efficiency and speed advantages, the market for LPDDR has gradually expanded from traditional products such as smartphones to some server processors such as Nvidia Grace processors, as well as some AI specific chips.

With the widespread application of AI, not only do mobile products require faster memory to support end-to-end AI models, but the demand for memory bandwidth from servers and AI specific chips is also increasing. Industry insiders say that the two major development focuses of the LPDDR6 standard are to improve data throughput and minimize power consumption.

According to previous reports, Samsung Electronics predicted by the end of 2022 that the LPDDR6 will be officially released in 2026. Etnews sources predict that this progress may be advanced to next year, stating that the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is expected to become the first product to support LPDDR6 memory.
