2023 semiconductor patent boom: Samsung leads by tens of thousands, followed closely by IBM, Qualcomm, and TSMC

The report shows that the number of patents declared in the United States region once again ranks first, reaching 348774, slightly increasing from 347408 in 2022 and ranking first for two consecutive years.

By country and region, US companies have obtained 162557 patents, an increase of 18%. Japan, China, and South Korea rank second to fourth, while Germany ranks fifth with 13905 patents.

In terms of company division, Samsung Electronics is far ahead in the list of the most innovative companies, obtaining 10043 US authorized patents, an increase of 8%. The other five most innovative companies are IBM (4003), Qualcomm (3852), TSMC (3442), and LG (3319).

According to the division of fields, semiconductor technology has topped the list for the second consecutive year, followed by virtual reality, 5G, artificial intelligence (AI), and software technologies related to unauthorized user detection. Other areas that entered the top ten include program control units, medical related technology, wireless technology, chemicals and chemical related technology (entering the top ten for the first time), and network security technology.In the field of artificial intelligence, the most creative patents involve machine learning models, general neural network development, neural network combination techniques, neural networks for image and video recognition, and neural network training using backpropagation processes. The recipients of the most authorized artificial intelligence patents in the United States in 2023 are IBM, Samsung Electronics, Alphabet, Microsoft, and Amazon.
