AMD and Nvidia will launch Arm based PC processors

Although AMD and Nvidia have not yet officially confirmed their plans to launch Arm based SoC for customer PCs, this is not their first time considering or venturing into the ARM processor field of the Windows ecosystem. This measure will be consistent with Microsoft's overall vision of promoting the adoption of Arm processors in Windows PCs, and is expected to make Windows PCs more competitive in competition with Apple products.

For many years, Microsoft has been advocating for the use of ARM based processors to achieve diversity and innovation beyond Intel's leading x86 architecture. Prior to this, Microsoft had attempted in the late 2000s but failed to achieve significant success. AMD has attempted to develop competitive Arm based SoCs, while NVIDIA has provided its Tegra processor.

In 2016, Microsoft once again pushed for the introduction of Arm into Windows PCs and signed an agreement with Qualcomm to produce Snapdragon processors for PCs. Microsoft has specially customized Arm versions of Windows for these SoCs.

"Microsoft learned a lesson from the 1990s that they no longer want to rely on Intel or a single vendor. If Arm succeeds in the PC chip field, they will never let Qualcomm become the sole supplier," said Jay Goldberg, CEO of D2D Advisory, in an interview with Reuters

The agreement between Microsoft and Qualcomm will expire in 2024, and companies such as AMD and Nvidia will have the opportunity to launch SoC for Windows PCs. However, the specific plans of these two companies still need to be observed.

As Intel's main competitor in the x86 CPU market, AMD may be inclined to expand its product line, although this may be inconsistent with its current data center oriented strategy. On the other hand, Nvidia has recently mainly focused on data center business, but is also interested in large-scale production of PC products.

Although both companies have made a lot of money in the fields of artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, and data center CPU/GPU, history tells us that companies focused on enterprise hardware are either gradually disappearing or becoming part of more well-known entities.

Three years ago, Apple was the first to launch SoC based on Arm architecture, injecting competitive performance and low power advantages into its desktop and laptop computers. In the Windows PC field, currently only Qualcomm provides Arm based SoC for laptops. However, according to Reuters, AMD and Nvidia, two highly anticipated PC companies, seem to be about to join.
